The Gear Bunker
In Longfellows poem The Rainy Day, he writes, “Into each life some rain must fall”. But in my case, it just seems to be snow at this point. I’m a skier so I love the white stuff between December and March. So I recently headed up to the local ski area after 12″ of fluffy snow fell only to find a […]
One complaint I’ve had with action cameras is their inability to perform well in low light and nighttime conditions. To improve this, GoPro recently introduced a lighting accessory called the Zeus Mini. This tiny waterproof LED light is a perfect companion for the new Hero9 Black camera. But it’s not exclusive to the cameras. When […]
Originally designed for the commercial fishermen that operate in sub zero temperatures, the new Swingsaw GlacierTrek PRO from XTRATUF incorporates a new technology that grips the boats wet, icy decks. Although not a commercial fisherman living in Alaska, I do live somewhere with a 5 month supply of icy conditions every year. So I’ve been […]
Breachpen was founded by an Air Force PJ with the basic idea of a disposable and lightweight thermal breaching option when mechanical, ballistic and explosive breaching is not ideal or may not be needed. After watching the video, I knew I had to see what the BreachPen was all about. I contacted the company and […]
SEAL: Sea, Air and Land When you think about SEAL’s we all picture an elite professional, battle-hardened, exceptionally trained, and a fully equipped badass operator. Well SOG made that into a knife, the SEAL XR. The SOG SEAL XR is just that, a Top Tier Knife. It is designed to be extremely durable, with high […]
The term Dopp Kit confuses a lot of people, but when it comes down to it, it’s just a bag to keep accessories organized when traveling, such as toiletries and other smaller items. It can also be referred to as a shower bag or, in the military, a ditty bag. Either way, it’s a small […]
The Viking Seax (pronounced Syax, roughly) was a cornerstone implement in the daily life of the Norsemen. The original EDC blade, the Seax was an all-purpose tool that saw use on the farm, in the boat and across the broad loom of slaughter. The unique shape of the Seax, a “reverse tanto” style where a nearly […]
ON SALE! $59.49 RUSH12 Backpack Recently I was looking to downsize my travel pack. For the past few years, I’ve been running a 5.11 RUSH24. The RUSH24 is a good pack and has served me well but I wanted to scale down my carry gear and increase my mobility so I decide to transition to […]
I always select gear based on its ability to serve dual purposes. I prefer to travel light and minimize my everyday carry to the extent possible. I tailor that carry to my circumstances, but there are some items that are non-negotiable. A good flashlight is one of them. The Streamlight ProTac 1L-1AA meets all my […]
Throughout my military career, whenever I needed a multi-tool, folding knife, fixed blade, or even an E-Tool, Gerber is the brand I chose because it never let me down. I usually opted for multi-tools or folding knives to keep on my kit, but over time I did start to realize the benefit of carrying a […]
Anytime you travel to remote areas, communication is often compromised. It’s a concern I have wherever I may be. As a former Ranger, communication was paramount for a successful mission. Nothing has changed since those days except the technology. Even with modern smart phones, travel to countries with a limited network will render them useless. Additionally, […]
Studies and Observations Group (SOG) has been in the business of crafting fine blades and tools for both military and civilian markets since its inception in 1986. In 1992, when the SEAL’s held trials for a new knife, the SEAL 2000 from SOG won the contract and remained in production from 1995-2007. The 2nd knife in the SEAL line was slightly […]
A couple years back, my Battalion Commander took all his Junior Officers up to the North Georgia Appalachian Trail, where we all hiked about 50mi of the AT in just over 24 hours. We weren’t given a specific packing list, but told to “pack what you’ll need”. We knew with this type of terrain, for […]
