For years, my go-to packs for EDC and travel have been the RUSH 12 and RUSH 24 from 5.11 Tactical. As much as I enjoy the features on the RUSH 12 and 24, I have always looked for something in the same size range but a little less tactical looking. Enter the MVR series of packs from 5.11 Tactical. They are available in both 25 Liter and 35-liter sizes. I received the MVR 35L for review and have been pleased with it.
Specs from the 5.11 website include the following:
- Measurements: 21″ x 10.5″ x 8.5″
- Capacity: 35 liters
- Weight: 1.5 kg / 3.30 lbs
- Durable 900D Fabric – Abrasion-resistant, weather-treated material built for repeated heavy use.
- Materials: 900D 100% polyester plain weave, 10 oz/yd², DWR C0, PU coated (2 sides)

Features I really like, and what sets the MVR 35L apart from other 5.11 packs, are the Velcro-covered MOLLE on the front panel. This allows patches, including large ones, to be applied, as well as attaching pouches, such as a medical pouch on the exterior for quick access. Additionally, the inside pack panel is Velcro, allowing for attachment of patches. I really appreciate this when traveling, as I attach admin or organizer pouches for things like my wallet, extra cash, passport, and other important documents. There are also shock cords on the face where you can stash your jacket or other garments when not needed. But remain accessible for quick retrieval.

Starting from the outside, the back panel is ventilated to keep you dry while wearing. The shoulder straps are padded for comfort, adjustable, come with a sternum strap attached, and have attachment loops. There are also attachment points for a waist belt, should you care to add one. Additionally, the MVR 35L features attachment points on the bottom of the pack, allowing you to attach a sleeping bag or heavy coat. The sides have water bottle pockets capable of accommodating a 32-ounce Nalgene bottle. Four adjustable compression straps on the sides keep the pack nice and tight. Finally, there’s a zippered compartment with side access for laptops and tablets.

The front of the MVR 35L has the Velcro/MOLLE panel. You can either leave this empty or attach patches or pouches, depending on your needs. The panel opens to a spacious admin pocket for quick grab necessities, such as paperwork, phone cables/chargers, notepads, and anything else you need handy without opening the main compartment. Above that is the shock cord panel. I wish more packs had this feature, as I find it very handy for traveling between cold and warm climates. It gives you a place to stash your coat or jacket without having to carry it around in your hands. Just above that is the fleece-lined tech pocket. As time has gone by, I appreciate this pocket increasingly more. I always try to travel with just one bag. And the tech pocket has become one of the pockets I use for my quick grab items. It’s the place I put my phone after passing through security at the airport. I keep my earbuds in there for when I get on the plane, small medical items, or a small bottle of hand sanitizer. It keeps these things at my fingertips without having to open the bag.

The interior of the MVR 35L opens clamshell style, giving you access to all your packed items. Personally, I use packing cubes to keep my clothes organized and not move all around during movements. The back wall of the MVR is Velcro, allowing attachment of pouches or patches as previously mentioned. As well as having an attachment point for a hydration bladder. On the opposite wall are two mesh pockets for additional organization. Another feature on the MVR is the inclusion of two mesh pockets on the side walls. I found these very handy for small items that usually wind up floating around the main compartment of the pack.

I’ve been using the MVR 35L for just over two months for daily carry, short hikes into the woods, and a quick personal trip. It carries well and packs more than I’ve needed on my trip. It works and works well. If you are looking for a pack that bridges the gap between the RUSH series and a low-profile pack, the MVR is an excellent choice. I can recommend this pack without hesitation.
Fit and finish on this pack is particularly good, what I’ve come to expect from 5.11 Tactical. Everything is smooth, the zippers work without issue, no dangling strings or cheap-feeling materials. It gives me the feeling of a less tactical and more modern version of the RUSH line of packs. The 35-liter pack would work well as an all-around pack for EDC, travel, and outdoor activities. Although I haven’t had my hands on the 25-liter model, I think that the small size would make it perfect for daily EDC, work, gym, or carry-on pack.
Thanks to 5.11 Tactical for providing the MVR-35 for review. MSRP is: $150.00.
