5.11 Rush 12 Review: Proven Tough After 16 Years of Abuse

November 3, 2025 by Guest Writer Leave a Comment

5.11 backpack story

By Tristan Russell

If you’ve ever trained, deployed, or traveled with me, there’s a good chance you’ve seen my faithful sidekick: a scuffed-up yet unstoppable 5.11 Rush 12 backpack. I grabbed it back in 2008 while stationed at Fort Bliss, and for the last 16 years, it’s been with me everywhere, from the range to the road, and across more borders than I can count.

The Rush 12 traces its roots to gear originally developed for the FBI in the early ’90s, and that lineage of rugged utility is still alive in everything 5.11 Tactical makes today. This pack is proof of that heritage.

It’s lugged 12-gauge shells through Istanbul, held soaked wetsuits after dives in the Indian Ocean, and endured more abuse than most gear sees in a lifetime. It’s been dragged across docks, jammed under airline seats, and tossed into boat lockers, yet it continues to hold strong. Over time, it has survived airports, jungles, deserts, and frozen ports in 50 different countries without a single rip in its fabric.

After nearly two decades of hard use, the only thing that’s failed is a single zipper. That’s it. Every strap, seam, and stitch is still intact.

The next-gen Rush 12 keeps the bombproof design you love and adds smart updates for modern carry.

Gear that lasts that long is rare. It’s why 5.11 Tactical continues to earn my loyalty, as well as that of countless others in the military, law enforcement, and outdoor communities. Their equipment holds up when it matters most. When you buy one, you’re not just getting a backpack; you’re investing in gear that will probably outlast most of what’s in your closet.

And it’s not just the pack. I’ve still got a pair of 5.11 Tactical pants from 2010, back from my early contracting days. They’re still fully functional, just waiting for me to get back to a 34-inch waist.

If you need a backpack that shrugs off daily abuse, long flights, and tough environments, the Rush 12 tactical backpack has already proven its worth. In my opinion, it’s the very definition of “buy once, cry once.”
