From my time in infantry training and various outdoor pursuits, I’ve learned to value clothing that can take abuse while still performing across changing environments. That experience tends to make it easy to separate marketing claims from gear that holds up in the field.
This year, Kifaru International expanded beyond its well-known packs, load-bearing systems, and technical clothing to include hunting apparel, bringing its backcountry-first mindset to the apparel category. It’s a natural extension of what they’ve always done. Still, it also raises an obvious question: Does that same durability and functionality translate into wearable gear?
For this review, I took a selection of their apparel-the Spike Merino Crew, Roam Crosslayer, and Passbreaker Pant-on a trip to Texas earlier this year, using it during a mix of fly fishing, ranch work, and general outdoor movement to see how it performed outside of controlled conditions.

Spike Merino SS (Short sleeve) Crew

The first piece of Kifaru hunting apparel I used was their Spike short-sleeve shirt. The shirt is made from a mix of merino wool and nylon. Merino wool helps regulate body temperature as a base layer. The wool also helps wick moisture and reduce body odor. I found the Spike helpful on the water during my fly-fishing trip as a base layer under a sun shirt. Even with the sun shirt, I was comfortable without sweating up a storm. The wool base layer also helps wick moisture while hiking on mountain trails.
“Redefining a backcountry essential, the Roam Crosslayer is a lightweight technical midlayer engineered for total versatility.” ~ Kifaru.net
Roam Crosslayer

View Roam Crosslayer
The second piece of Kifaru hunting apparel I had the opportunity to try out was the Roam Crosslayer. The Roam serves as both an outer and an insulating layer. The outer face is weather-resistant due to its PFAS-free DWR treatment. This treatment helps to buy me time if I need to throw on a waterproof layer. The Roam also serves well as an insulating layer during mildly cool conditions, such as when the weather is in the forties.
The Roam’s hood has an athletic cut, and the neck is made with minimal materials to help achieve a better cheek weld on a rifle or a shotgun. The layer’s front also has a kangaroo pocket with mesh backing to assist with heat dumping. I found the kangaroo pocket helpful for storing my phone and wallet when I need my hands free. The Roam’s fit is a little looser because it is woven to compensate for the lack of stretch typically found in knitted clothing.

Passbreaker Pant

View Passbreaker Pant
The last piece of Kifaru hunting apparel I got to try out was their Passbreaker Pant. This pant serves as a multi-role pant, from early- to mid-season stalks to everyday chores. At the waist, the pants are suspender-compatible, with silicone grip tape to prevent underlayers from riding up. The Passbreaker also has two hand pockets and two back pockets, with covering materials to keep items secure. Kifaru also added two zippered front thigh pockets, similar to those found on many combat pants. To help regulate body temperature, there are mesh side vents with zippers. Lastly, the pants have kneepad pockets for kneeling on hard ground.
The Passbreaker Pant is a durable pant that withstands abrasions from trail riding and brush. The one thing I found a little annoying is that if I have items in both the thigh and hand pockets, the items can hinder my range of motion when I’m crouching. However, I also found this pant useful for traveling due to the number and placement of the pockets, as well as the side vents. The vents were especially helpful in cooling down when I was sitting in a stuffy airport during one of my recent flights.
