The Untangled Collection from Costa Sunglasses | Baffin

October 18, 2022 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

It seems that when I’m supposed to be on vacation, I’m still “working”. I’m using quotations because although wearing new sunglasses in sunny environments, or testing a sand free towel or travel shirt is technically working for The Gear Bunker, it really isn’t. Fortunately, while vacationing in the Spice Island of Grenada, I had a chance to try out a couple of new offerings from Costa Sunglasses. First up is the Baffin from their Untangled Collection.

Untangled Collection

The Untangled Collection currently features five different frames made from 100% recycled fishing nets. And not just any fishing nets. Ones that have been discarded or lost at sea. Tangled into delicate marine life or washed ashore polluting the beaches. You’d be shocked too know how many nets are littering our seas. Fortunately a company named bureo is working with fisheries, collecting and turning these damaging nets into a viable medium called netplus. A material that can be used in new consumer goods.

Creating a positive impact since 2013, over 600,000 KG of netplus materials have been collected to date from 50 participating fisheries in South America. – bureo.co

Costa’s commitment to the environment

Costa Sunglasses is one of the first to adopt the netplus material from bureo and form it into sunglass frames. The Baffin, ironically named after the cold current that ushers discarded fishing nets across the ocean, is a bold new masculine design. With a matte gray “raw” finish on the frame, the brilliant blue 580 polarized glass lenses really pop in contrast. A slick recycled aluminum logo is embedded into the sculpted temples for extra detail. While a rubber insert on the interior of the temple and nosepiece keep the Baffin planted on your face.

Testing in Grenada

With bright sunshine, the Caribbean Sea and temperatures in the mid 80’s all week in Grenada, these sunglasses were used daily. Wether on the beach, the dive boat, by the pool or hiking further inland, the Baffin was a good fit for all occasions. Even when my face was sweaty, the shades stayed put. Additionally, Costa provides one of the best maritime lenses in the world and these were no exception. The 580 polarized glass lens allowed a crystal clear view into the water. If only my eyesight was still crystal clear. Fortunately, Costa does offer Rx eyewear for those with a prescription. Fortunately, the Baffin was designed to be fully recyclable providing an attainable end-of-life solution.

Check out the entire line of recycled sunglasses from Costa’s Untangled Collection and see if there’s anything that appeals to you.
