Let’s face it: airline travel has been getting more expensive. To cut costs, the ready man sticks with a carry-on and a personal item. To meet that need for more usable space in a personal item, Kifaru’s Checkpoint steps into the gap. From the office to the airport, it delivers the packing space that matters.

Quick Verdict
Best for: Adventurers and travelers
Strengths: Durability, capacity, ability to add the Sherman Pocket
Weaknesses: Lack of CCW compartment

Overview
Starting with the specs, the Checkpoint measures 11” wide by 19” high by 9” deep and weighs 3 lbs empty. It offers 2010 cubic inches of total volume, divided between the main compartment, front pocket, and top pocket. The pack is built from 500D Cordura.

The top pocket handles smaller essentials. During my travels, I use this pocket to store cables, a battery pack, and a small e-reader. Below the Checkpoint’s top pocket is the ambidextrous front pocket. I primarily use this stash pocket to hold a book, or two, along with a fleece layer.
The main compartment opens clamshell-style for easy access. Inside, there are two mesh pockets for storing loose items such as snacks or extra cables. The Checkpoint’s main compartment also features a document pocket and a padded laptop sleeve. One standout feature is the zippered quick access to the laptop sleeve, which is especially useful when moving through TSA. Reinforced side pockets round things out and easily hold 32 oz water bottles.
Use
I’ve used the Checkpoint as both a travel pack and a day bag, and it performs well in both roles. As a travel pack, it has enough capacity for a short trip—clothes, toiletries, and essentials fit without issue. Paired with a carry-on, it handles bulkier items like a jacket with ease.

As a day bag, it transitions cleanly between city use and field. In the city, the lack of a CCW compartment is worth noting for planning purposes, but the layout makes organizing documents and a laptop straightforward. In the field, it carries layers, snacks, and water without issue. I’ve taken it on several fly-fishing trips, and it’s held up without any problems.
