Rime Light IN Flex Vest from Mammut

September 28, 2023 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Rime Vest

With fall approaching and temperatures dropping, I find my jacket selection more challenging before I head out the door. Morning lows are in the 40’s but temperatures still reach the 70’s later in the day. Finding the right piece of gear is important. I never considered myself a “vest guy” but sometimes, it’s just the right call. And when I need a well built technical piece of gear, I often look to the Swiss manufacturer, Mammut. New for 2021 is a lightweight stretchable vest that caught my eye. The Rime Light IN Flex Vest.

Mammut’s Rime Vest is a lightweight, elasticated insulating vest

Rime Vest

“IN” stands for Insulation indicating the intended use of the vest. Ajungilak OTI stretch is Mammut’s technology for wadding, the insulation material between the vest’s outer layer and lining. This insulation is used to make an exceptionally light, fast drying and elastic insulation material. The outer material is Pertex Quantum Air.  A material designed to increase air permeability and strike a balance between windproof rating and breathability. Focusing the insulation on the chest and back, while limiting bulk under the arms, creates a vest that moves with the athlete. And allows both warmth and breathability while making fast ascents. Additionally, Two YKK zippered hand warmer pockets are located in a harness friendly location. And provide a place to pack the entire vest into for easy storage in a backpack.

“Close to hand whenever you need it: the Rime Light In Flex Vest Men is a reliable insulating jacket for unpredictable weather that can be stowed in the left-hand front pocket. If you start to feel cold, it will warm.” ~mammut.com

Rime Vest
The Rime Light Flex Vest has been a good choice for several of our activities. We recently explored the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the weather was calling for the vest. The Pertex outer fabric blocked the chilly breeze while hiking the rugged shoreline. While the insulation provided the perfect balance between warmth and breathability for spirited hikes. I’ve also thrown this vest into my golf bag for those early tee times. The athletic cut allows unrestricted freedom of movement while swinging a golf club.

This winter, the Rime Light IN Flex Vest will make its way into my ski bag. There are plenty of situations where adding a little more insulation to your core area is the solution. Rather than adding a bulkier insulation jacket under a Mammut shell. Further reducing bulk is a non-insulated high stretch material located under the arms. Making the Rime Light IN Flex Vest a perfect companion for any active outdoors person. Priced at $179, the Swiss designed Rime Vest is a solid choice in my opinion.
