Kento Hooded Hardshell | Mammut’s Superior Stormproof Hardshell

October 31, 2019 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Kento Hooded Hardshell

When I pack for an extended trip, I rely heavily on lists. Maybe because I’m a “type A” kinda person and like to be organized. Or maybe because I’ve gone places without some key piece of equipment. Either way, I now live by my ever evolving packing lists. One item that has proven to be essential for comfort as well as survival is a reliable waterproof hardshell jacket. For a few months, I’ve been testing the Mammut Kento Hardshell jacket in various conditions. From an extended Overland trip through the Rocky Mountains and Utah to the stormy shores of Lake Superior. And everything in between.

Kento Hooded Hardshell

100% Waterproof Tested

Having used Mammut hardshell ski jackets for years, I was thrilled to be asked to test another one of their fine products. With superior construction and a Swiss design, you know you’re getting a quality product. Using their proprietary waterproof membrane rated at 20,000mm, the Kento isn’t letting you get wet. Coupled with extreme breathability, you’re sure to remain comfortable during high levels of activity. A pop up electrical storm while crossing Ophir Pass, Colorado this summer put this to the test. Warmer temps while hiking at elevation can make for a sweaty mess inside a hard shell. But this jacket was the exception. After extended strenuous use with nothing more than t-shirt on underneath, I was surprisingly dry when I doffed the jacket after descending below the weather.

A fall trip up to the Keewenaw Overland Adventure Retreat found us again in some volatile weather conditions. 40 MPH winds and rain were in the forecast for most of the 4 days while camping at the very tip of the Upper Peninsula. But when you’re well prepared, the weather can’t rain on your parade. Well, it can but you won’t be cold, wet or miserable. The lightweight minimalist design of the Kento Hardshell along with its athletic fit and unrestrictive fabric proved superior. Additionally, the Kento incorporates water resistant zippers to keep your pocket contents and electronics high and dry. A fitted and adjustable hood allowed good visibility while keeping the rain out. Again, this was my go-to piece of outerwear and I’m glad I had it.

Kento Hooded Hardshell

Final Thoughts:

With a reasonable price point of $229 for such a feature packed jacket, it’s a hard one to beat. Add a lifetime warranty from Mammut and you really can’t lose. So wether you’re hiking, camping, mountaineering or Overlanding, the Kento Hardshell from Mammut is Gear Bunker APPROVED and should at a minimum be on your radar.
