DMOS Stealth Shovel | A winter driving necessity

November 2, 2023 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Compact, lightweight and very effective at removing snow. The Stealth Shovel from the DMOS Collective, although small, punches above its weight. With a lineage that includes shovels like the Alpha Driveway, Alpha Expedition and Delta, it was time I finally offered my thoughts on the smallest snow shovel of the bunch. Living in a northern climate that averages 120″+ of snow per winter, we try to be prepared for the worse. Aside from owning all wheel drive vehicles exclusively, there are some additional measure we take this time of year. Changing our summer tires over to dedicated winter tires. Packing an extra jacket, gloves, hat and blanket in the trunk. And packing some additional recovery items to self rescue should we end up in the snowbank.

I have an older version Alpha 2 mounted to my Tundra and the Delta on my FJ. What I’ve been neglecting is my smaller vehicle, the VW Golf R. Although it’s all wheel drive and wearing amazing winter tires, it’s also the vehicle most likely to get stuck. With less than 4 inches of ground clearance, it wouldn’t take much snow to pack under the vehicle and render it stuck. So I needed a smaller shovel that I could throw in the trunk. One that could fit under and excavate snow effectively. Collapsible down to 18 x 9 x 2.25”, the Stealth can also fit in a backpack, on a snowmobile or on one of their custom-fitted mounts.

Featuring strong and lightweight 6061 American sourced aluminum for the blade, its serrated edge cuts through snow and ice like a butter knife. The adjustable aluminum shaft can be set to 35″, 47″ or a maximum length of 57″ This is critical for excavating snow (or sand) from underneath a vehicle. As my son and I found out recently while blasting around in the snow with the Jeep and FJ (see video). He got sucked into the ditch by a snowdrift and got the Jeep stuck to the frame rails. Fortunately, I had the Stealth Shovel in the FJ for just this reason. Between the Maxtrax and a little snow removal with the Stealth, we were able to get back to goofing off.

DMOS is more than shovels though. By simply offering a storage bag with an extra interior pocket, I’m able to convert this shovel into a more complete kit. Adding work gloves, a head lamp, LED emergency flares and a jumper box make this the perfect trunk companion. With more room to spare, I could add a soft shackle, emergency blanket, bottle of water or a small first aid kit. However you decide to build your kit, I do recommend getting the Stealth Shovel Everyday Carry Bag to keep everything consolidated.

DMOS Shovels are proudly made in the USA with American sourced materials and labor. It’s not easy to find companies that aren’t outsourcing material and labor overseas these days. I’m proud to be an owner of several DMOS products and they haven’t disappointed. The performance and quality are second to none. These products are not inexpensive because they’re built to last a lifetime.
