What’s In John “Shrek” McPhee’s Go Bag

June 10, 2025 by Scott Witner Leave a Comment

What's In John "Shrek" McPhee's Go Bag

With the riots we witnessed in LA and the very real threat of Iranian sleeper cells lurking in the shadows, one thing’s clear: when society goes sideways, you’d better be ready to move fast. Having a solid go bag isn’t paranoia. It’s the difference between getting trapped in chaos and getting you and your family out alive.

John “Shrek” McPhee from SOB Tactical knows this better than most. His go bag isn’t some overstuffed bushcraft kit—it’s built for exactly what we’re seeing on the streets tonight, or what could hit tomorrow if a sleeper cell decides it’s time to light up a soft target. He keeps it in his van, ready to grab without a second thought.

Inside? Just what works: a gas mask for tear gas or smoke, a dark shirt to stay low-profile, smoke grenades for cover, bear spray if things get close, and a handful of tools to slip away when crowds turn violent. Nothing extra—just what you need when staying put isn’t an option.

When things go sideways—whether it’s a riot or a terror attack—your plan has to be simple, fast, and effective. No one’s coming to save you when the street turns ugly.

Emergency Go Bag Checklist

  • Mystery Ranch Backpack – Chosen for its rugged durability and quick-access tri-zip design, making retrieving gear efficiently in high-pressure situations easy.
  • Smoke Grenades – These are used to create a visual barrier or signal distress, especially in highway or crowd-control scenarios.
  • Gas Mask – Essential for protecting against tear gas, pepper spray, or other airborne irritants during unexpected situations.
  • Bear Spray – Provides a non-lethal means of deterring aggressive individuals while maintaining a safe distance.
  • Black Jacket or Pullover – Offers a nondescript, low-profile appearance that helps avoid drawing attention or being identifiable.
  • Flex cuffs – Compact and lightweight, ideal for temporarily restraining individuals in unpredictable situations.

His philosophy is simple: it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
