Exploring Grenada with the TICO from Costa Sunglasses

March 21, 2020 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

In Costa Rica, you’ll often hear the word Tico amongst the locals. Almost as often as the phrase Pura Vida or “pure life”. They proudly refer to Costa Rican males as Ticos and for the females, Ticas. Costa Del Mar recently introduced a new frame under the same moniker. This masculine wrapped frame is a great option for outdoor waterborne ops where maximum sun and wind protection is required.

Like most of the offerings from Costa, the Tico is available in several frame colors with an assortment of 580P polycarbonate and 580 glass lens colors. All polarized of course. I’ve been using a frame in Matte Wetlands with a Gray mirrored lens. A few features that were new to me are very subtle yet effective. For one, the rubber nosepiece has a couple of little vents cut into them on each side. This helps promote airflow to cool as well as allowing heat to be removed preventing lens fogging.

The gray mirrored 580P lenses were a great option for everyday wear. Not too dark, not too light and providing a crystal clear view of the landscape. The matte wetlands frame is more subtle in person than in the pictures on the Costa website. The ends of the temples feature a hole that’s compatible with several of Costas accessory retainers. Great for the waterman to prevent loss. Overall, another winner from Costa del Mar.

Final Thoughts:

After researching the comment section on Costa website, I saw a few mentions of the rubber on the inside of the temples coming off prematurely on the Tico. I took a hard look at this part of the frame and even started picking at the rubber to see if there was an adhesion issue. Additionally, I left them out in the sun, sweated in them all day, soaked in saltwater and even got them greasy with sunscreen. Yet haven’t found any issues with the rubber on the temple or nosepiece. If there was ever a valid problem, it’s been addressed.
