The Road to Overland Expo East via the Daniel Boone National Forest

The Road to Overland Expo East via the Daniel Boone National Forest

After attending last years Overland Expo in North Carolina, I couldn’t wait to return. This year, there was a change of venue to Arrington, Virginia and an earlier calendar date. Like most road trips, I tend to map out the more conventional and fastest route from my home in Northern Michigan. This year, I looked for a new place to explore on my way. Well, mostly on my way. The plotted course was close enough to the Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest of Kentucky. Drawing on inspiration from Lifestyle Overlands episode of the Red River Gorge, I decided to take a closer look.

Utilizing my membership to Overland Bound, I reached out in the forums section to see if anyone else was planning to be in that area around the same time. Low and behold, I gotta hit. 3-4 guys were planning to drive the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway and sections of the Kentucky Adventure Trail the week before Expo. With an invite to camp with them, I prepared the truck for an early departure. And headed out on a 9 hour trip south to link up with the crew.

Daniel Boone Backcounty Byway Video:

This video reveals a glimpse of the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway and our novice exploration of the beautiful terrain. Our vehicles included a Toyota Tacoma Off Road with mud terrain tires, a bone stock 4Runner TRD Pro, a Jeep Gladiator with a 2.5″ lift and 35″ tires and my Tundra with a 2.5″ lift and 35″ tires. You’ll see what the vehicles went through and what they didn’t. As always, it’s important that you travel prepared for anything. But traveling in a group was much easier than doing this alone. Plus, it’s harder to enjoy a cocktail and tell stories by the campfire with no one to share it with.
