The Olight OPen 2 | A Pen & Light Union

April 7, 2022 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

When I’m packing my go-bag, there are two items I always have in the admin pocket. A good pen and a small light. In some of my travel backpacks, the Streamlight that I typically pack is a bit too thick to slide into a pen pocket. Fortunately, I recently discovered the OPen 2 from Olight. This checks both boxes by providing a nice smooth writing utensil and a compact light. And the OPen 2 only takes up a single slot in the admin pocket.

Made from aluminum alloy, the larger than average body of the pen still feels comfortable in my hand. I wear an XL glove so smaller hands may find it a bit large however. The barrel measures .50 inches compared to .40 inches of a standard ink pen. The extra width is necessary for the 110mAh rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery and USB-C charging port. The ink pen is deployed with a simple bolt action lever. And effortlessly retracted with the flick of the finger. Olight uses a shorter than average ink cartridge to make room for the light located on the other end. But includes a spare cartridge and USB-C cable with the pen.

Olight OPen 2 Video Overview:

On the opposite end of the OPen 2 is a clever little LED light. Using the tail cap button, the side mounted light can toggle through four different brightness levels. 5, 20, 60 and 120 lumens on its highest setting. It even includes a lock-out feature to prevent a negligent discharge of the white light. The light is bright enough on high to be used as a practical flashlight with a 52 foot beam throw. But the purpose of the light is to illuminate near objects allowing you to write in limited visibility. You can even separate the light from the pen itself for independent use.

Final thoughts:

I’m always a fan of items that can serve more than one purpose. Ultimately lightening my or simplifying my loadout. The OPen 2 from Olight is one such item. Now that I’ve got my hands on this convenient piece of kit, I plan to place one in all my vehicles. The ability to remove the light from the pen allows additional versatility. Featuring a stainless steel pocket clip, the OPen 2 can be fastened to the brim of a cap or a shirt pocket. Illuminating the area in front of you to perform various tasks. Priced at just under $60, the OPen 2 isn’t cheap. If you’re only considering it a pen. The added light feature makes sense for me and combines two items I regularly carry. It also makes the perfect gift for anyone on your list.
