The Gas Growler from Ignik | Saving the planet one green bottle at a time

September 25, 2023 by Erik Meisner 1 Comment

After attempting to sail through the Northwest Passage, from Seattle through Alaska to Greenland, with his family, Graeme Esarey saw the direct impact of humans on the planet. It was at this point that he decided to start an environmentally friendly outdoor company. Although the attempt at the Northwest Passage was ultimately turned around by endless amounts of storm driven ice, Graeme Esarey remained inspired and focused on the new business of Ignik Outdoors.

One of Igniks products that caught my eye at Outdoor Retailer also won a coveted Innovation Award at the show. The Gas Growler, a self contained 5 pound reusable propane tank, was designed to replace those single use green propane tanks that you see in the campground garbage cans all over the world. Or worse, littering the very landscape we need to preserve.

Ignik Gas Growler Video Review:

“Today Ignik makes high-quality, environmentally thoughtful heating products for the wilderness. We enable more folks to get outside earlier and remain outside longer.” -ignik.com

I’m all about reducing waste and am the first to admit, I’ve gone through a fair amount of those 1 pound disposable propane bottles. Overland travel places less concern on weight and size, so I’m ready to upgrade and help the planet. The cost to fill the Gas Growler with 5 pounds of propane came to a whopping $2.95. About the same price as a single 1lb tank. And that’ll probably last me half of the entire summer of Overland travel.

The 12 year lifespan of these cylinders should offset about 480 of those green bottles. Which take up a shit ton of space in a landfill and are horrible for the planet. But it’s not just a 5lb propane cylinder. Included with the Growler is a padded and insulated case that protects the tank from dents and dings as well as protects the inside of your vehicle. Stored inside the lid of the case is a 4 foot hose that connects the growler to any stove or accessory that utilizes green bottles.

Although the Gas Growler comes with a nice case made from recycled materials, I may exercise a different means of transporting the Ignik. Mounting it to the outside of the FJ Cruiser via a purpose built tank carrier will free up a little space inside the smaller vehicle. Allowing us to directly connect the hose and cook or heat without needing to move the tank. We’ll see how that works out in the long run.

Take a look at the Ignik website and see if anything inspires you to help the planet. As members of 1% For the Planet, Ignik supports several environmental causes that focus on the outdoors and Alaska.
