Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, Carbon Field knife

April 25, 2024 by Art Dorst Leave a Comment

About a month ago I was watching a video on the Ranger Fieldcraft and Survival YouTube channel and noticed the channel owner using a different knife than the one that he usually uses in his videos. I dropped him a question in the comments section and he revealed that it was a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, carbon (140 for short).

I really liked the look of it, so I ordered one. So I opted the no sheath option on the website. As I wanted a sheath with a dangler and ordered one from Armor Sheaths. The knife arrived two weeks later and the sheath the following week. Out of the box I liked the feel of the over molded rubber grip. I have large hands and it fits my hand like a glove. No gaps, or slipping, yet changing grip was smooth without the tacky feeling that sometimes comes with rubber grips.

The full tang extends out to end of the handle in a loop configuration that allows a lanyard to be attached should you choose. The 5.5” blade length is my preferred length for field work and camp chores. The blade came hair shaving sharp out of the box and has a good balanced feel in your hand just begging to be put to work.

“The Jääkäripuukko is not designed to sit on a shelf for decoration; this is an honest tool made for hard work.”~varusteleka.com

I took it out to the backyard lab and went to work creating fuzz sticks and shavings for starting a fire. It managed these basic chores with ease. Using the ninety-degree spine with my ferro rod, I was able to start a fire by throwing huge sprays of sparks onto the tinder. I also used it to baton pieces of wood into small pieces for use in my Solo Stove.

The 140 managed all tasks with ease and the edge did not require any touch up. I think that the 140 is a good outdoorsman’s knife and would have no hesitation to carry it were I still in the military. It’s a solid knife that I believe will provide the user with years of quality service. MSRP is with a sheath runs in the $80.00 price range, without the sheath $47.99.

Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, carbon features:

  • Medium size general purpose utility knife, a solid choice for most situations.
  • Traditional puukko-style blade profile with drop point.
  • High scandi-style grind with secondary micro bevel.
  • Spine ground and beveled to strike sparks from ferro rods.
  • Full/stick hybrid tang with textured over molded rubber grip.
  • Protruding bare tang head with lanyard hole.

Technical specs:

  • Weight (w/o sheath):6.70 oz
  • Total length: 10.6″
  • Blade length: 5.5″
  • Blade thickness: 0.17″
  • Edge angle: 23°
  • Steel: 59 HRC
