Right On Trek Meals | Not your Average Camping Meals

October 10, 2022 by Rick Dembroski Leave a Comment

Recently we were fortunate enough to test and evaluate some new pre packaged meals from Right On Trek. A Kalispell, Montana company that produces a huge array of prepackaged backpacking meals. Nutrition, while engaging in any number of outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, overlanding or hunting is key to having enough energy to safely enjoy yourself and return home safely. Right On Trek is not your average multi national pre packaged food company who just slap freeze-dried food in bags. The team at the company believes in their products being tasty, nutritious and packaged in a way that minimizes the impact to the environment.

During our test and evaluation, Right On Trek was nice enough to send us a meal package to sustain 1 person , 1 day on an adventure. Now this meal offering consisted of a breakfast and dinner selection and a wide array of snacks. It is a calorically dense meal coming in at 2500 calories. But packs 85 grams of protein in the 1.7 lbs of total dry weight. Below is our breakout and the caloric listing from the team at Right On Trek.

Breakfast:

  • Cheesy Mushroom Scramble
  • 2.4 Oz (69 grams)
  • 380 Calories
  • Total Fat: 26g (8 grams saturated fats 40% Daily Value)
  • Cholesterol 345 mg (115% Daily Value)
  • Cooks in 8 minutes

Snacks:

  • Garlic & herb tuna almond flour crackers
  • Dried mangos
  • Dark chocolate protein bar
  • Wisconsin vintage cheddar cheese bar
  • Lance wheat thin crackers

Dinner:

  • Chicken Alfredo Pasta
  • 4.0 Oz (115 grams)
  • 520 Calories
  • Total Fat: 20 grams (11 grams Saturated fats / 55% Daily Value)
  • Sodium 660 mg (29% Daily Value)
  • Cooks in 7 minutes
Right On Trek breaks down the important info in an easy format

Modularity in Meals

One of the great things that Right On Trek does is offer a dizzying range of food choices that consists of 15 individual meals and 9 pre designated Adventure Meals. Meals that contain similar set ups to what we reviewed (Hot breakfast / Hot Dinner and snacks). They also offer multi person packaging of their individual meals in 1, 2, or 4 day options, some of these choices are gluten free, keto friendly and vegetarian for campers who have specific dietary concerns. I’m not aware of any other outdoor food company that makes planning for multiday trips this easy and straightforward

One thing I did notice when browsing the companies web site is that for most of the meal offerings there were at least two available add on condiments to the meals such as parmesan cheese, for the cheesy mushroom scramble. Or banana chips for the Hearty Morning Coconut Granola breakfast. These small additions are just some of the ways Right On Trek is differentiating themselves from other companies.

Preparation and Taste

The meals we were provided for our test and evaluation period were designed to be easy to cook with only 6-7 oz of water and a heat source. Although on the packaging for the cheesy mushroom egg scramble, the company says to use oil and beeswax in the prep, we opted for a simple non stick pan and oven. During this review we did recruit a guinea pig of sorts. My brother-in-law is gluten sensitive and I thought he would make the perfect test subject. I have found that many gluten sensitive people have a hard time finding ready to eat meals so this was a fantastic opportunity for both him and Right On Trek.

raw pasta and 1/2 oz of USDA inspected chicken

Chicken Alfredo Pasta Impression

The estimated cooking times on both meals were close to the estimated time. And I can say that the chicken alfredo pasta was just the right size at 4 oz for a meal. The meal was creamy and hearty. The penne noodles weren’t soggy or crunchy so I didn’t mess that up, which was a shock to me. I did however stir it often while cooking to make sure nothing stuck or burned. Not turning up the heat is critical to any pasta dish and allowing the pasta to cook at its own pace, do not feel rushed when cooking camp meals, you will regret it.

The taste of the pasta dish is flat out amazing. Not too runny and sticky with slight hints of basil or garlic. This meal really knocks it out of the park for me in terms of taste and consistency. Honestly I wish this was a microwaveable meal because it would be great for lunches at well in the office. The portion size was perfect when paired with crackers or bread. This is easily the best easy to eat chicken meal I’ve ever had.

Cheesy Mushroom Scramble Impression

Our tester found the hardest part of making this meal was measuring the water and putting it in the bag to shake before cooking. The egg and mushroom mixture didn’t look like much when it was dropped into the pan but once the moisture began to cook out it presented itself as a normal scramble egg breakfast. This meal did cook much faster than the 7 minutes as shown on the package and like most meals it is not a heat and forget type of meal.

The eggs were fluffy and cheese powder is very reminiscent of kraft macaroni and cheese powder which we found comforting and tasty. We weren’t sure what to expect since neither one of us had ever tried powdered eggs out of a package. We were both happily surprised by the taste, consistency and portion control. I’m not a huge fan of mushrooms but that is 100% personal preference

Would I recommend Right On Trek Meals?

Yes I can wholly recommend Right On Trek meals. If the rest of the offerings were as well done as the two we reviewed, I would say they are well worth the money. The fact the company allows for a wide range of mix and match meal options and condiment add-ons to their meals is a huge advantage to consumers. The Adventure Meal that we received arrived in a black mesh bag containing the meals, snack and a coffee pack which was nice but Right On Trek added a few options that other companies don’t.

Incuded with ours was a small non load bering carabiner, the calorie card and a semi flexible plastic Outdoor Ethics card from the Leave No Trace Foundation (www.lnt.org). This card goes over the 7 Principles of LNT and covers a few topics many campers overlook. These principles may be basic common sense to some but not to new campers

  • Plan Ahead and Prepare
  • Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
  • Dispose of Waster Properly
  • Leave What You Find
  • Minimize Campfire Impacts
  • Respect Wildlife
  • Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Small features like the Leave No Trace card sets Right On Trek apart from the crowd

Thanks for taking time out of your busy autumn season to read all about Right On Trek and their meal options, I feel that they represent real value and great choices for your outdoor nutritional needs. I want to thank them for allowing us these products to test and evaluate. Their meals will defiantly be in my kit next spring when I am planning my outdoor photography and kayaking adventures here in the Great State of Alaska.
