Overland Built FJ Cruiser Walk Around | Part 2

April 30, 2020 by Erik Meisner 2 Comments

You may have watched the previous walk around video I did on the FJ Cruiser shortly after The Gear Bunker acquired the vehicle. In that video I discuss what the rig already had on it and what we planned to add or alter to suit our needs as a dedicated Overland vehicle. In the following “State of the FJ” video, I follow up on several of the key points previously discussed. As a blessing in disguise, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lock down has freed up a lot of time to finish the projects on the FJ. Now we just need to open up the country so I can get out there on longer trips. The Gear Bunker is still planning to attend FJ Summit and Moab, UT in July, Keewenaw Overland Adventure Retreat in September and Overland Expo in October. Along with several other small trips in-between.

Overland Built FJ Cruiser Walk Around:

Projects completed:

  • Installation of the sPOD electrical distribution system. Providing a clean wiring hub for 8 switched electrical accessories. Lights, Compressor, Front Locker, Fridge, etc.
  • Addition of an ARB Dual Compressor and 1 gallon air tank. Providing an air source for airing up tires as well as activating the ARB front air locker.
  • iPad mount: Our primary navigation while off road is GAIA GPS. So we RAM mounted an iPad in a location where both driver and passenger can provide guidance.
  • Installed an OrangeBoxx FJ console mount
  • Installed a Midland MXT400 MicroMobile Radio and antenna.
  • Prepped and coated both bumpers, grill, rock sliders, skid plate and fender flares with Raptor Liner: Increasing rust and scratch protection.
  • Added a Warn VR EVO 10-S winch: A necessary piece of equipment when exploring alone.
  • Installed Baja Designs Squadron Fog lights front, and rear: Increased visibility in dust, fog and snowy conditions.
  • Mounted an Alu-Cab Shadow Awn 270 degree awning
  • Added 6 Sport S2 scene lights to the BajaRack providing a halo of light around the vehicle.
  • Mounted MaxTrax
  • Deleted the rear seats
  • Custom built a rear drawer storage box and Dometic fridge mount.
  • Installed OrangeBoxx FJ Max storage
  • Installed OrangeBoxx Driver Side Full MOLLE
  • Switched from Mud Terrain tires to General Grabber AT-x All-Terrain tires
  • Installed Propane Tank and RotoPax mounts from Refined Cycle.
  • Added the 4G-X OTR WeBoost Cellular signal booster
  • Installed RoofNest Falcon Tent

I use a RAM mount for the iPad with a long “B” arm that I can swing out for the driver to view.
