Morakniv Kansbol with Survival Kit | A minimalist survival knife

October 23, 2021 by Guest Writer 1 Comment

In a SHTF situation a good knife can mean the difference between life and death. When it comes to survival the Morakniv Kansbol with Survival Kit is a great selection as an all- around survival knife.

The lightweight knife is 4.3” long and weighs in at 8.5 ounces. With a 2.5 mm thick blade made of Swedish stainless steel. The Kansbol with Survival Kit comes with a sharpener and fire starter incorporated into the sheath of the holster. The Firestarter is securely held in the sheath and also further attached via a paracord lanyard.

The hallmarks of Scandinavian design are minimalism, simplicity and functionality, all things present in the Kansbol.

At first blush this knife struck me as a fishing knife. But after using it, I discovered that the Kansbol is more than capable of being an all-around survival knife. Cutting through seatbelts sounds like an easy task, but over the years I have witnessed many knives fail at this task. The Kansbol has a razor-sharp blade that easily accomplishes this task. The blade itself is hardened to HRC 56-58. Morakniv uses a ‘Scandi Grind’ or zero grind. The Scandi grind is known to provide a very sharp edge, that particularly excels at cutting wood.

After aggressively chopping at deadfall branches to get a fire going the edge seemed to lose none of its razor-sharp edge. Every inch of this blade is purpose built including the spine. The spine is ground to a 90-degree angle and is sans polishing or buffing making it compatible with the ferro rod.

“This Kansbol with Survival Kit (S) has everything a real bushcraft enthusiast needs, optimized and ready for sudden challenges. An ideal partner to the hunter and hiker.” ~industrialrev.com

To further test the blade, I exposed it to the elements because any good survival knife must be able to survive moisture. After being left outside overnight in the steady rain the Kansbol shows no signs of rust or damage the following day.

The handle is made from TPE-rubber and provides a good grip even when wet. The model that I tested came in Mora’s Burnt Orange color, making this one hard to lose.

The sheath is made of polymer and offers just the right amount of retention while not being too difficult to access. The knife mounts simply onto any belt and won’t fall out when running or hiking through the woods. The sheath, like the handle, comes in Burnt Orange color.

Conclusion:

What this knife lacks is some of the flash of the more tacticool options on the market. Bit it more then makes up for it with functionality. The knife is lightweight durable, sturdy and stands up to the elements. The survival kit that accompanies it is the cherry on top for this blade. Which just found a new home in my bug out bag.

Your review says that the sheath is not MOLLE compatible. That is partially correct. It I should possible to purchase the Kansbol equipped with Mora’s multi-mount, which can be easily secured to just about anything including pouches or rucksacks with PALS.

The multi-mount is also sold as a separate item, but to the best of my knowledge (could be wrong) it cannot accommodate Kansbol or Garberg sheaths fitted with his Mora’s survival kit.
