Joolca Hottap | Portable hot water heater | Part 1

Awhile back I introduced the HOTTAP v2 from Joolca to our readers. Well, I finally received my Nomad Kit from them and started tinkering around with it. I basically went through an unscripted first set-up in the garage with the sink. Followed by the shower in the back yard just to see how it all worked. And I must say, it was magnificent. Below is part one of a two part video. Setting up the sink and faucet. The next article will cover setting up the shower and Ensuite enclosure.

For the last few years, we’ve relied on the Road Shower for personal hygiene while traveling overland. But it has its limitations. The water is heated solely by the sun and is only warm during peak sunlight hours. So no morning showers and it doesn’t work when cold. Plus, you have to haul the water at all times which adds significant weight to the vehicle. On the other hand, the HOTTAP v2 is a portable on-demand propane water heater. Utilizing a 12 volt pump and the ability to tap into any water source. Allowing us to have steaming hot water (120F+) at any time of day. Additionally, the ability to tap into a natural water source means you’ll have an unlimited supply of hot water. Well, limited only by the amount of propane you carry. For instance, a standard 20 lb propane tank provides 12 hours of hot water on the hottest setting. So our 5 lb Ignik Growler that we carry on the FJ will provide 3 hours of hot water.

Joolca HOTTAP v2: Part 1

As you can see, the set up is a little bit involved and takes a hot second. But the Joolca engineers did a fantastic job of simplifying the process with quick connect fittings all around. Including the propane fitting. Once I set-up the sink and shower a few more times, I’m confident that the process will become more efficient. But don’t wait if you want hot water this summer, these kits are selling out quickly.
