Do You Need To Carry a Spare Magazine?

October 30, 2024 by Scott Witner 1 Comment

Do You Need To Carry a Spare Magazine?

My approach to carrying a spare magazine has evolved for daily concealed carry, primarily driven by practical considerations rather than the need for extra ammunition.

While having additional rounds can be reassuring, my main motivation is to address any potential malfunctions, such as a failure to feed, rather than relying on sheer firepower. A spare magazine offers a quick solution to malfunctions, allowing for a tactical reload if necessary—a measure that enhances my confidence in handling unexpected scenarios where reliability could be crucial.

Although extra rounds can indeed provide peace of mind, the reality is that most civilian encounters typically don’t require a high round count. This understanding shapes my carry choices. I aim to make decisions based on actual threat levels in my daily environment, balancing preparedness with practicality.

Consequently, I don’t always carry a spare magazine; I assess my need based on the situation. To me, a lot of this choice comes down to being familiar with my firearm, knowing which ammo functions reliably in it, and having complete trust in my setup—all of which stem from consistent training and hands-on experience.

For everyday carry, I lean towards the Tier 1 Concealed Axis Elite holster, which has a built-in mag carrier on the side. This setup allows me to carry a spare magazine comfortably without noticeable printing, issues with weight, or discomfort—benefits that contribute to my overall readiness.

However, when discretion is key, or if I simply prefer a lighter setup, I switch to the Tenicor Velo holster. The Velo doesn’t accommodate a spare magazine, meaning I typically forgo the additional mag when I choose this option. This situational flexibility lets me balance accessibility, comfort, and discretion.

Ultimately, carrying a spare magazine is personal and varies by context. Consistent training and a solid understanding of my equipment guide my choices. By practicing with different setups and understanding my carry gear’s limitations, I can confidently adjust my loadout to match my daily needs.

For me, carrying spare magazines is a calculated choice rather than a hard-and-fast rule, and I’m curious—what about you? Do you carry a spare magazine regularly, or is it based on specific circumstances?

In 2007 my wife (who I first met in 2012 when I was hired as her bodyguard and research assistant on an election monitoring project) blew the whistle on the entire Alabama political power structure. On “60 Minutes”. Within weeks of her recorded interview with CBS her house was blown up and she was run off the road by a crooked local off-duty cop. Our home was firebombed three days before we were married in November of 2013. She was attacked again (another deliberate vehicular ramming) in 2016.

Here’s my “every time I have pants on” loadout today. Sight is a target focus both eyes open iron sight, a variant of the Goshen Enterprises Hexsite with the same inventor.
