Dark Energy’s Indestructible Poseidon PRO Portable Charger

April 15, 2024 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Poseidon PRO

Over the years, I’ve gone through several portable power chargers that claimed to be durable. Some look the part but not many have actually lasted over a year. With all the traveling we do, having a reliable charger is critical. Wether we’re charging phones, a Garmin InReach, Laptops or GoPro’s, there’s always a need for these handy devices. When Dark Energy asked if I’d like to try out their Poseidon PRO, I figured, why not? And when they claimed it was indestructible, I said, “hell yea”!

Poseidon PRO Mini-Torture test:

The Poseidon PRO is slightly smaller than my iPhone 12 Pro MAX. Yet packs 10,200 mAh and some dark magic called Power Pulse. When using a USB-C to USB-C cable, Power Pulse increases the charging speeds compared to ordinary chargers by up to 2.5 times. Very handy for charging action cameras while on the go. This also allows up to 36 hours of power for mobile phones, 10 hours for tablets and 5 hours for a laptop. All in a small armored form-factor that claims to hold a charge for over 3 years.

“A steel-like polymer is used to construct these shells. it has taken falls from 75+ ft on to rock, a blast from a shotgun, an explosion from one pound of tannerite, & the crushing force of 1,000+ lb.” ~ darkenergy.com

Dark Energy is clearly targeting the outdoorsman with the Poseidon PRO in my opinion. Checking all the boxes that would typically kill a mortal charger in such a hostile environment. An IP68 Rating means this item can remain submerged in 6 feet of water for 45 minutes. That’s pretty cut and dry. No pun intended. Not like the subjective “splash proof” rating of some other brands. What the hell constitutes a splash anyhow? That annoying kid at the pool that thinks it’s “cute” to splash dry people? Or working the deck of a crab boat in the Bearing Sea? Because one of those “splashes” is nothing like the other.

Poseidon PRO

“The capability of the Poseidon PRO to be completly underwater for 45+ minutes is an ability only one charger holds, this one” ~ dark energy.com

Then comes the MIL-STD 810G rating. This means the charger can withstand 1000 pounds of crushing force and a 50 foot drop onto concrete. Now you and I both know that these limits should not arise under normal end-user conditions. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t throw it off the roof of my house onto the driveway out of curiosity. The case is constructed of a rigid, steel-like polymer that is tough as nails. Along the sides of the Poseidon PRO is a softer compound to help absorb hard hitting impacts. Some scuffs were noted after a couple of roof drops. But nothing that effected the Poseidon PRO.

Dark Energy Accessories

To top it off, Dark Energy throws in a few Batman accessories with the Poseidon PRO. First off, they include a nice ruggedized fiber reinforced 3 foot USB-C cable. An item often left out by other charger manufacturers. It’s nice to have a dedicated cord with the charger. Next up is a buttoned leather strap to secure the charger to your Bat-Belt, backpack, tent wall or anything else you can find. This strap even has an attached sub-strap to secure the USB cord. Finally, a 5-in-1 carabiner completes the package. Beyond just the steel carabiner, you’ll find a built-in bottle opener, glass breaker, flat and phillips bits and a 3″ locking blade. **WARNING** the carabiner is not TSA compliant due to the blade.

Final thoughts:

Based on my mini torture test, the Poseidon PRO from Dark Energy exceeded my expectations of what a portable charging station should be able to withstand. This thing is clearly a rugged device that will be an asset to any outdoorsman…outdoors-woman…uhhh…outdoors-human?  At first, I thought the leather button strap was kinda gimmicky. No one is going to strap a battery to their waist. But while using inside a rooftop tent. The strap allowed me to hang it rather than take up valuable floor space. It also works well inside a backpack. At $119.99, it’s a little pricey. But you’ve heard the saying…”buy once, cry once”. The Poseidon PRO is designed not to let you down.
