Chelem sunglasses from Bajío | Fresh eyes for a rich life

April 18, 2023 by Steven Meisner Leave a Comment

Chelem sunglasses from Bajío (bah-HEE-oh) are named for the white sand flat in Chetumal Bay. These mid-sized, fashionable shades are reasonably priced at $209 and well-suited for all activities on the water. With three frame colors, seven polycarbonate lens colors and six glass lens colors to choose from, there’s are a wide variety of options to suit any particular style. Right out of the rich packaging, it’s apparent Bajio is sparing no expense.

Deeper Dive

First and foremost, the polarized lenses on the Chelem are spectacular. Bajío boasts a proprietary LAPIS™ technology that supposedly filters out blue light to reduce eye strain on the water and enhance colors and shapes. The focus is clearly on (a) contrast and (b) blue light blocking. After a recent trip to Key West, it was clear the technology works. There was no noticeable change to the landscape color, but everything appeared sharper without adding brightness. The water was clear and crisp with no weird shadowing. I was initially concerned the frame style would allow light through the sides. But, there is just enough curve in the frame to make this a non-issue. Zero eye fatigue.

“Named for the striking white sand flat in Chetumal Bay where you can spot big permit heading straight for you (just before they snub you and turn the other way), Chelem looks good and fishes even better with hidden protection from the interior sunshield”. ~bajiosunglasses.com

The fit of the medium-sized Chelem is athletic, comfortable and grippy. As I sprayed golf balls across Old Hickory County Club I hardly noticed I was wearing glasses. For the size, these shades are surprisingly light weight. Unfortunately, the lens technology did nothing to help shag balls from the watery hazards. I’d be comfortable wearing these Spring skiing or wake boarding. The fit is that good!

About the Company

Bajío is Spanish for the shallows, a special spot between the land and the creepy-deepy. Its CEO and founder, Al Perkinson, is an industry vet with a clear vision to protect the world’s saltwater flats. From the frame materials all the way to packaging, it is clear Bajío is committed to being environmentally conscientious without jeopardizing performance. Frames are made from a bio-based nylon, and the company is currently working on making frames from recycled water bottles and ocean trash. Even the handsomely crafted cactus leather case is tanned using eco-friendly processes. Everything counts when it comes to keeping our oceans clean. Bajío is a clear cooperate leader in this space. Bravo!
