Après Ski with the Fuego Down Jacket from Cotopaxi

February 15, 2021 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

I just got home from a week in Utah skiing with the fam and I thought I’d pass along some info on a new jacket I’ve been wearing from Cotopaxi. It isn’t a company I’d been real familiar with up until Outdoor Retailer this winter. At first glance, I was really digging those retro stripes and colors. But after meeting with the Cotopaxi rep, I was also digging what the company stands for.

“Do Good”

The companies motto, “do good” echos within the company. From ethically sourced materials to fair trade and good working conditions for everyone that touches the product. Cotopaxi is ensuring pure goodness throughout the entire process. This certified B Corporation donates 1% of its revenue toward community development and addressing poverty. Additionally, to date, they’ve awarded 42 grants in six focus countries.

Now about the jacket itself. I love to have options when dressing for alpine adventures. And that includes après skiing, or after skiing. I was fortunate enough to take my family to Utah for a week of skiing. While enjoying the beautiful spring skiing conditions, we found ourselves basking in the sun and enjoying a cold Corona (hold the virus) at the base of Snowbird Resort. The Fuego Down Jacket was the perfect insulation weight to just chill in.

Made with a super lightweight 20D ripstop nylon exterior, this 800 fill down jacket is incredibly packable. When stuffed into it’s included stuff sack, this jacket is about the size of a water bottle and easily fits into my Sportube Boot Bag. Toasty enough to take the chill off without being a sweatbox. A pair of zippered hand pockets on the outside plus a pair of interior stash pockets hold all your essentials. In addition to the generous interior stash pockets, a small interior zippered pocket is the perfect place for a wallet or passport. I use it to store the included stuff sack.

Although I prefer a jacket with sleeves, my wife opted for the Fuego Down Vest in a funky color combination. Both of us love the look and function of these well-made pieces of outerwear and have been wearing them on and off for a month or so. The price point for the Cotopaxi Fuego Down Jacket ($230) and women’s Fuego Down Vest ($150) places them in a premium category. Similar to Patagonia or Mammut, these are well made and the company stands behind them with a rock-solid warranty. In my experience, the Fuego seems very well built and I expect to be using them for years to come.

The back of the jacket reads, “gear for good”. At first glance, I figured that meant it would last for good. Like forever. But maybe it means gear for the greater good. Like good for humanity. Quite frankly, I hope it reflects both interpretations.

Fuego Down Jacket Features:

  • 20D giant-ripstop nylon with DWR finish
  • 800-fill RDS-certified, water-resistant down
  • 20D mini-ripstop nylon lining
  • Full-length front zipper
  • Elastic binding at cuffs
  • Hem drawcord
  • Two interior stash pockets
  • Zippered hand pockets
  • Included stuff sack
  • MSRP $230

I’m 6’0″ and weigh 220 pounds and the XL is snug. Not gonna lie, that’s a clear sign that I need to lose some weight. But I wear a Large in most other brands. Cotopaxi uses a very athletic fit in their sizing so keep that in mind when ordering. Your best bet is head into REI and get your hands on the jacket itself to ensure the correct fit. This is one you won’t be disappointed in. Plus you can rock some funky retro colors while you’re at it.

“Cotopaxi (kōtōpä´ksē) is an active stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian region of the Andes. The volcano is an important part of the local culture and is held sacred by nearby Andean indigenous communities. It’s also our namesake.” -cotopaxi.com
