Unlike my 800 pound fire rated gun safe, the Blacksmith SF0105 Rifle Safe is more akin to a lockable gun cabinet. As it states no specific fire rating. However, the steel long gun case was easily portable by myself upstairs to be mounted in my closet. Fulfilling my desire to lock up a couple long guns in our bedroom. The reason this works for me are the various ways to access the contents of the safe. First is the reliable biometric fingerprint reader. Second is a 4-10 digit customizable keypad code. And finally, a physical key to unlock the case. Incase of battery failure, either the key can be used. Or an external battery pack (included) can be plugged into the keypad to energize it.

Mounting the SF0105 is pretty straight forward. The rear of the safe is pre- drilled with 6 holes for mounting to a solid wall. Included are 6 anchor bolts. I however, mounted the safe in my closet on an exterior wall of the home. For this type of mounting, I used 6 lag screws to bite into the 2×6 wall studs behind the drywall. You may need to drill your own holes in the back of the safe to align with studs in your particular location. Now I have quick access to a wider range of firearms should something go bump in the night.

Inside the safe, an adjustable gun support frame can be located at any height to cradle a rifle barrel. Additionally, a removable metal shelf is located inside for storage of ammunition boxes, magazines or additional pistols. If the 3 door mounted pistol pouches are inadequate. And finally, a separate lockable box is located inside for documents, jewelry or anything else needing an extra layer of protection.

Final thoughts:

Although the Blacksmith Rifle Safe is a good inexpensive option for safe gun storage. There are a few things that could be improved. It’s not quite deep enough to hold an AR-15 style with an optic in the middle 3 locations. The pistol grip will contact the door as it closes. You can place that style rifle on the far left or right locations as the pistol grip will clear the door. Although there is 1 LED light located in the door jamb, additional light would be welcome. Finally, the fingerprint reader is very reliable. But it emits an audible beep as it reads the fingerprint. Possibly giving away your location as you access the contents. A “silent” mode would be appreciated during use of the keypad and biometric reader. All things said, at only $270, the Blacksmith SF0105 5 Rifle Gun Safe is a great value.
