A classic military style folding knife from Zero Tolerance | ZT0223

November 14, 2019 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

When Zero Tolerance showed me their upcoming knife offerings at SHOT Show, the Tim Galyean designed ZT0223 jumped off the page at me. It oozed with the classic lines of past military style knives. In fact, the knife didn’t even look like a folder at first glance. Partly because of the handles semi closed back design mimicking the stacked leather handle of the K-BAR. Packed with premium materials and features, I knew I had to get my hands on one when available.

Well, that day arrived and I’ve been carrying this bad boy for over a month now. And so far it has proven to be a work horse of a knife. Carrying out all the cutting and utility duties for the past few Overland camping trips. Even as an EDC knife from time to time. The truth is, this knife feels bigger than it actually is. With an open length of 8.6″, the ZT0223 feels and looks more like a fixed blade knife. But careful use of titanium in the handle and frame lock yield a knife that weighs a mere 4.7oz. Making it a viable option fo EDC use as well.

Blade Steel:

As with all knives from Zero Tolerance, premium blade steel is of upmost importance. And CPM 20CV is among the best. Known for its exceptional hardness, wear resistance and the ability to resist impact, CPM20CV also offers the highest level of chromium of any high-vanadium steel. In addition to its resistance to corrosion, ZT further protects the clip point blade with a non glare black Diamond Like Coating (DLC). A large cut out along the top of the blade help reduce overall weight. While an aggressive jimping ensure a positive thumb purchase. Subtle design cues like the holes drilled into the ricasso help tie it all together.

Handle:

The tactile portion of the ZT0223 is its G10 wrapped titanium handle. Keeping weight to a minimum considering the hefty size of this knife, titanium was the obvious choice for the frame of the handle. Additionally, titanium was spec’d for the frame lock but you’ll find a hardened steel insert to insure a reliable lockup. Even the bronze anodized tube spacer is formed from the same space age material. Earth brown G10 wraps from one side of the knife to the other forming a unique look and feel for a folding knife. Functionally, this handle design also keeps dirt and debris from entering the frame. Finally, a reversible pocket clip can accommodate both left and right handed “tip up” carry.

ZT0223 Features and Specs:

  • Manual open, KVT ball-bearing system
  • Frame lock, with steel lockbar insert
  • Reversible clip (left/right, tip-up)
  • Steel: CPM 20CV, DLC coating

  • Closed Length: 5 in. (12.8 cm)
  • Overall Length: 8.6 in. (21.8 cm)
  • Weight: 4.7 oz. (134 g)

The Guts:

In the military, we regularly use the phrase, “keep it simple, stupid” or KISS. Because adding complexity also adds the exposure to failure. Less working parts equals greater reliability. Zero Tolerance applied the same thinking to the 0223 when selecting the operating mechanism. Opting for their simple yet reliable KVT manual opening mechanism rather than an assisted system. The KVT mechanism incorporates a series of ball bearings surrounding the pivot point in order to provide a glass smooth rotation of the heavier blade. To employ the blade, an ergonomic flipper located on the spine can be manipulated with either hand adding to its versatility.

Final thoughts:

Zero Tolerance knives have remained one of the favorites within my arsenal. Having the opportunity to test knives from a wide variety of manufacturers over several years has allowed me to compare mechanisms, materials and overall quality. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize the synergy of materials and design that set ZT apart. From my first ZT0350 to this one, ZT doesn’t seem to miss the mark on quality. Although these premium USA built knives carry a premium price tag, know that you’re getting exactly what you pay for in addition to a Limited Lifetime Warranty to protect your investment.
