Upgrading the Glock 19 with Olights BALDR S Light Laser Combo

May 12, 2022 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

BALDR S

I recently finished a block of training with my Trusty Glock 19. Although we focused on the addition of the Red Dot Sight from Holosun, one phrase kept coming up. “We don’t shoot in the dark”. Not implying that we don’t shoot at night. Just that we don’t shoot at something or someone we can’t see clearly. One of the key fundamentals of shooting is positively identifying the target. So how do you identify your target at night? With a weapon mounted light of course. Olight is no stranger to The Gear Bunker and their recent addition of the upgraded BALDR S has caught my attention.

BALDR S: Combining both a highly visible green beam and 800 lumens of white light. The runtime is upgraded to 140 minutes.

Its smaller form-factor make the BALDR S a perfect companion for the compact Glock 19. This new light from Olight packs more horsepower than the BALDR Mini by 200 lumens. BALDR S cranks out an impressive 800 lumens with a 130 meter throw range. Thus raising the bar once again for a weapon light this size. Incorporating a visible green laser offers a secondary aiming device for those that prefer it. The user can select between light only, light/laser or laser only. Further increasing the versatility of this well thought out light.

Adjustable Rail: Slide the rail adapter back and forth freely to fix the light in the desired position. Quick installation and removal within one second

Mounting the BALDR S is made easy with a sturdy quick release lever. BALDR S ships with the Glock specific rail installed but includes a 1913 Picatinny rail for those that use it. Once mounted to the pistol and prior to tightening the quick release, the light can be slid fore and aft on the rail. Making final adjustment more user specific. Set screws lock down that adjustment once set to prevent any unintended movement. Also included is a clever magnetic charging cable to keep the lights proprietary 3.7v 380mAh battery topped off. A built-in red/green light on the cable indicates charge status.

Activating the light / laser is made possible with ambidextrous switches that surround the trigger guard. A quick tap downward turns on the light. Another quick tap turns it off. Push and hold the switch allows momentary illumination. And when you don’t need all 800 lumens, a double tap of the switch dials it back to a reasonable 100 lumens.

Final Thoughts:

Olight is known for filling a mid level weapon mounted light niché. Well appointed and fully featured lights at a price point that anyone can justify spending. Although not built for combat, I’m confident that these lights will serve the general gun owner well. Things to keep in mind: The max lumen of 800 is only available for the first 60 seconds. Before it automatically throttles down to 300 lumens for the remaining 39 minutes. So it’s important to keep the battery topped off. Also of note is the IPX4 rating. Meaning the BALDR S is only splash resistant. Despite these minor shortcomings, it’ll be mounted on my EDC Glock 19 for the time being.
