Exothermic Pulsefire LRT | Flame throwing fun for all.

August 26, 2023 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

After receiving the Pulsefire LRT (Long Range Torch) from Exothermic for a test session, I can tell you one thing for sure. I have yet to meet someone unwilling to try it out. And I haven’t seen anyone try it out without smiling or laughing after. I mean, who wouldn’t want to throw flames 25 feet plus from a simple hand-held flame thrower. Although the Pulsefire was designed with practical uses in mind like agricultural or forrest service work. It’s pretty fun to set a bonfire, camp fire or scrap pile ablaze. Especially if no-one knows you have a flame thrower.

The true beauty of the Pulsefire LRT is its simplicity. Exothermic did a great job of making this flame thrower, sorry, Long Range Torch, simple and safe to use for the common person. Using straight gasoline or a gas/diesel mix, you simply fill the fuel reservoir like any other piece of lawn equipment. Charge the 2200 mAh Lithium Ion battery and you’re all set. The battery powered fuel pump draws fuel from the reservoir and directs a stream through a plasma arc at the tip of the LRT. And I’m sure you can guess what happens next.

A steady stream of ignited fuel is thrown up to 25 feet away from the Pulsefire. The ergonomics, switches and safety mechanisms are all well thought out by Exothermic. I really didn’t have to explain much of anything to the first time users of the LRT.  Fortunately, we had some combustibles from recent yard work to dispose of so everyone had a shot with the Pulsefire.

Exothermic Pulsefire LRT Demonstration:

“We’ve spoken with, demonstrated, and sold to local firefighters, farmers, controlled burn prescribers and/or members of the U.S. Forestry Service, and they love the idea of an efficient, portable, long range torch for their work.” ~exothermic.tech

Perfect for:

One thing to remember is that the basic Pulsefire only holds 27 seconds of fuel onboard. So trigger happy users will blow their load quicker than expected. Fortunately, Exothermic offers a 3.3 gallon backpack kit that provides 4 minutes of run time for more practical purposes. Like for agriculture and controlled burn prescribers. But if you just want to be the guy on your block with a flame thrower, the basic unit will do the trick. Because the Pulsefire doesn’t use a pressurized fuel tank, refueling is as easy and safe as filling a lawnmower.

Final Thoughts:

During our test period with the Pulsefire LRT, the unit performed as advertised. Providing a reliable stream of fire every time we demanded it. However, we did notice a strong oder of gasoline one day in the garage. I had left some fuel in the Pulsefire after its last use and it began to leak. We noticed that fuel was wicking its way out of the hose that connects the fuel canister to the pump. At both the tank and the pump connections. The tank cap has a functioning pressure relief valve so we couldn’t really figure out why there was fuel finding its way out of these connections. I can only assume the hose clamps need to be swapped out for clamps that can be tightened.

Pulsefire

Although the Pulsefire LRT is an absolute blast to use, I sometimes struggle to find a practical purpose for owning it. That being said, as we begin to build a new home on our lake property, we’ll have more scrap piles and tree/shrub debris to dispose of in the future. So my tune may change. However, if you need to buy a gift for the guy, or gal, that has everything. And have a budget of $630, the smiles that the Pulsefire will generate may be well worth the price tag.
