Casio Men’s G-Shock GW6900-1 | 6 Year Review!

Casio Men's G-Shock GW6900-1 Review

Are you tired of constantly adjusting your watch’s time or worrying about it running out of battery at the worst moment?

The Casio G-Shock GW6900 might be the solution you’ve been looking for. Designed for those who demand accuracy, durability, and low maintenance, this tough solar-powered watch offers the convenience of self-charging and the precision of atomic timekeeping.

In this review, I’ll draw on over a year of experience with the G-Shock GW6900 to examine its features, benefits, and why it stands out in a crowded market. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a frequent traveler, or just someone who appreciates a reliable timepiece, this guide will help you decide if the Casio G-Shock GW6900 is the right watch for you.

Overview of the G-Shock GW6900

The G-Shock GW6900 is a part of Casio’s Tough Solar line. This watch is shock-resistant, water-resistant, solar-powered, and it also receives a time signal from the atomic clock in Colorado. For users in Europe, a corresponding station covers most of the continent, ensuring accurate timekeeping no matter where you are.

Features and Modes

The watch offers several modes, accessible by pressing the mode button at the bottom left-hand side. Here’s a breakdown of what each mode provides:

  • Timekeeping Mode: As expected, the main screen displays the time, day of the week, month, and date. It also shows whether it’s AM or PM and can be set to a 24-hour format. Under the day of the week, a small indicator for daylight saving time is also present. Across the top are indicators for battery charge, alarm status, and seconds count.
  • World Time Mode: This feature allows you to set a secondary time zone, particularly useful for travelers. Because the watch is radio-controlled, it automatically adjusts to local time, making it easy to track different time zones without resetting the main time.
  • Alarm Mode: The GW6900 has four standard alarms and one snooze alarm. The snooze alarm repeats in five-minute intervals when the light button is pressed, similar to a smartphone’s snooze function. This can be handy for quick naps or reminders.
  • Stopwatch Mode: The stopwatch measures time in hundredths of a second and includes a split feature, though it can only show one split at a time. You can pause, resume, and reset the stopwatch, making it useful for timing tasks or exercises.
  • Countdown Timer: The timer can be set for periods ranging from one minute to just under 24 hours (23 hours and 59 minutes). It’s a versatile feature, although the alarm sound is not particularly loud, making it less suitable for crucial reminders. It’s adequate for casual use, such as timing activities during camping.

Solar Power and Battery Life

One of the standout features of this watch is its solar charging capability. The black portion of the watch face is a solar cell, which charges an internal battery. Over the year I’ve had this watch, the charge indicator has only dipped below ‘High’ once. Even during the winter, when natural light exposure was limited, a day spent outdoors quickly brought the charge back to full. This impressive battery life means you rarely have to worry about recharging, a major advantage over other types of watches.

Durability and Water Resistance

The G-Shock GW6900 is water-resistant up to 20 bar, roughly equivalent to 200 meters. This makes it suitable for swimming, showering, and even light snorkeling. However, Casio advises against showering with the watch due to the potential for soap and water to penetrate the casing, though I have done so without any issues. The watch’s rugged design makes it resistant to scratches, and the band holds up well against scuffs, maintaining a decent appearance even after regular use.

Ease of Use and Maintenance

One of the aspects I appreciate most about this watch is its low maintenance. The solar power feature means no manual charging, and the atomic timekeeping ensures the watch remains accurate without manual adjustments. The watch attempts to sync with the atomic clock signal every night around midnight. If it fails to acquire the signal, it will continue to try hourly until it succeeds, keeping the time as accurate as possible.

Comparisons to Smartwatches

While you might consider a smartwatch as an alternative, the G-Shock GW6900 caters to a different audience. It offers essential timekeeping and useful features without the constant need for charging or connectivity. This watch is a superior choice for those who value simplicity, reliability, and minimal maintenance.

Final Thoughts

The Casio G-Shock GW6900 is more than just a watch; it’s a dependable companion for those who value reliability and simplicity. Its solar-powered design, atomic timekeeping, and rugged durability offer a hassle-free experience that stands out in a world increasingly dominated by high-maintenance smartwatches. This timepiece is perfect for outdoor adventurers, busy professionals, or anyone who wants a watch to keep up with their active lifestyle without constant attention.

From accurate time synchronization to versatile features like world time, alarms, and countdown timer, the GW6900 delivers everything you need, from a wristwatch wrapped in the iconic G-Shock toughness. If you’re ready to upgrade to a watch that offers both performance and peace of mind, the Casio G-Shock GW6900 is a choice you won’t regret.
